Toronto designers team up for good cause
Twenty-three of Toronto’s top designers have joined forces to renovate and refurbish the Wellspring Cancer Support Centre at Sunnybrook, a home-away-from-home for cancer patients.
Since opening its doors 10 years ago, Wellspring Sunnybrook has expanded by an average of 30% per year. Last year the centre registered 10,000 visits and has reached its capacity.
In response, Wellspring has launched a $5 million campaign to expand the facility from 2,400 square feet to over 7,000 square feet. It will also add new programs to the roster which cannot be offered in the current space, including wellness, nutrition and cooking classes, childcare services and various workshops and meetings.
The design team, headed up by co-chairs Robin Siegerman and Kimberley Seldon, also includes Del Weale, Robert Tanz and Lori Abrams among many others.
In addition, a number of vendors have also donated their products and services to the project including Cambria, Benjamin Moore, Vitroceram and Metro Wallcoverings.
“Working with and co-ordinating such a large group of incredibly creative and talented designers is new for me, and I’m thrilled to be part of this team in support of such a wonderful organization,” says Robin Siegerman, registered interior designer and founder of Sieguzi Interior Designs Inc. “Wellspring is a resource I hope I never have to use, but for those have and who do, I’m so pleased to be able to help make it a serene and comfortable place to re-charge and get much needed emotional support.”

Home reno spending up by $4.5 Billion in 2009
Renovation fever hit many Canadians in 2009: A new survey released by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) indicates that an estimated 2.1 million households in 10 major surveyed centres completed renovations last year.
According to the Renovation and Home Purchase Survey the average cost of renovations was approximately $12,100.
The survey reports on actual renovation expenditures made in the previous year, as well as intentions to buy or renovate a home in 2010 in the 10 major centres: St. John’s, Halifax, Quebec City, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver.*
“More than $25.8 billion was spent on renovations in 2009 across the 10 major surveyed centres, an increase of about $4.5 billion compared to 2008,” said Gustavo Durango, senior economist at CMHC. “As well, when Canadian homeowners were asked about their renovation plans for this year, 43 per cent indicated that they intend to spend $1,000 or more by the end of 2010.”
Many households (42 percent) chose to contract out the entire renovation project, while 27 percent hired a contractor for a portion of the work. Another 25 percent of renovations in 2009 were completed by “do it yourselfers.”
Fifty-two percent of households said their main reason was to update, add value or to prepare to sell. Another 32 said the main reason for renovating was that their home needed repairs.
The top three renovations completed last year were: remodelling rooms (34 percent); painting or wallpapering (29 percent); hard surface flooring and wall-to-wall carpeting (27 percent).
Of the 10 major surveyed centres, St. John’s led the pack with the highest percentage of homeowner households that renovated in 2009 (59 percent). Ottawa came in at 58 percent, followed by Halifax and Winnipeg (both at 55 percent). The centre with the lowest proportion was Montreal at 45 percent.
Renovation intentions for 2010, across the 10 surveyed centres, are highest in St. John’s, where 55 percent of consumers indicated they plan to undertake renovations costing $1,000 or more. Halifax, Winnipeg and Ottawa follow at 50 percent each. The proportion of potential renovators is lowest in Quebec City and Montreal (both at 39 percent).
* All 10 centres were asked whether they intend to spend more than $1,000 on renovations in 2010 and whether they intend to buy a home in 2010. More detailed questions on intentions to buy or renovate were asked in Halifax, Montréal, Toronto, Calgary, and Vancouver.
Interior Designers of Canada restructures
Interior Designers of Canada (IDC) has announced a restructuring of its organization to strengthen its role as the voice of interior design. The announcement was made at the Association’s Annual General Meeting held recently in Halifax. The meeting was attended by more than 40 representatives from across Canada who came together to celebrate the restructuring and elect a new board of management.
The restructuring moves IDC from a seven-member organization of provincial associations to an association representing nearly 3,000 individual interior designers from coast to coast. It also strengthens the association’s relationship with manufacturers and suppliers. “Members across the country are excited about what this means for the future of our profession,” says newly elected president, David Hanson. “A strengthened IDC means the interior design community has a cohesive voice, which will benefit the profession in terms of advocacy and promotion, both nationally and internationally. It also means we are able to deliver programs and services more equitably to all our members.”
Hanson, a graduate of Ryerson University’s Interior Design program in Toronto, practices in Vancouver. He has served on numerous association boards including Interior Designers Institute of British Columbia (IDIBC), the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) and the International Interior Design Association (IIDA). He has also received several international honours from the industry.
Joining Hanson on the board executive are Donna Assaly as president-elect and Jenny Mueller Garbutt as past president. They are from Alberta and British Columbia, respectively.
Representatives from each of the seven provincial associations that formed the former IDC sit on the board as directors. They are: Ada Bonini, British Columbia; Adele Bonetti, Alberta; Aandra Currie Shearer, Saskatchewan; Stephen Lamoureux, Manitoba; Clinton Hummel, Ontario; Monique Leger, New Brunswick; and Carolyn Wood, Nova Scotia.
Another five directors represent the Association’s membership. David Gibbons of Ontario and Michelle Du of Manitoba represent the professional membership. Ron Hughes from Teknion represents Industry members, Jessica Gozdzierski of New Brunswick represents Intern members, and Janice Smith of Alberta represents Education members. Two non-voting members round out the board. Trevor Kruse of Ontario is the IIDEX Liaison; and Denis Chouinard of Quebec is a Provisional Director.
Susan Wiggins, who has been executive director for the Association of Interior Designers of Ontario (ARIDO) for nine years and has served as acting executive director of IDC for the last several years, will become executive director of IDC. She will lead a team of nine staff out of the Association’s Toronto office.
